Majorca's north coast: a family guide to Pollença and Alcúdia

Shallow bays, easy days and mountain views. Why the north of Majorca suits a family villa holiday so well.

· 6 min read

Two bays, two characters

Majorca's northern tip is framed by two broad bays. The Bay of Pollença is calmer and more refined, with a pine-shaded promenade and the old town of Pollença a short drive inland. The Bay of Alcúdia is bigger and livelier, with a long sweep of soft sand that shelves gently into the sea.

Both work well for families, and many villas sit in the countryside between them. That puts each beach, and the mountains, within an easy drive.

Things to do beyond the beach

Climb the Calvari steps in Pollença old town for views across the island, explore the Roman ruins at Pollentia near Alcúdia, or drive out along the Formentor peninsula for clifftop lookouts. The road is narrow and winding, so go early in the day.

For a slower afternoon, the S'Albufera wetland nature reserve is flat, shaded in places and good for spotting birds with children.

Choosing your villa

If you want to walk to the beach, look at villas close to the Port de Pollença or Alcúdia seafronts. If you'd rather have space and a garden, rural villas between the two bays offer more privacy, but you'll want a hire car.
